Once a small fishing
village and port, Sidmouth became a fashionable resort for the gentry in the
early 19th century. The town's numerous fine Georgian and Regency villas and
mansions are now mostly hotels, but have lost none of their charm in the
conversion. The Sidmouth seafront has a fine esplanade and is a lovely
spot for an evening stroll, to people watch, or for a doze in a deck chair with
the newspaper.
Sidmouth still has a good
selection of independent shops, shopping here is a unique experience with shops
you do not get elsewhere. There are genuine pubs, restaurants, coffee
houses and tea rooms. The town has an indoor swimming pool, theatre, cinema, and
golf course. There is a very good museum.
Surrounded by beautiful
countryside, Sidmouth lies on the Jurassic Coast world heritage site and the
South West coast path. There are some great walks and stunning scenery.
Boat trips are also popular.
